The Diocese of Macao Celebrates Its 450th Anniversary
A New Chapter in Sino-Vatican Friendly Relations

In 2023, the Diocese of Macao marks the 450th anniversary of its establishment—a significant milestone in its history. As a Catholic sanctuary steeped in the history of cultural exchange between China and the West, it has, through four and a half centuries of resilience and inclusiveness, borne witness to the twists and turns in relations between China and the Holy See, as well as their friendly interactions, whilst also serving as a vivid example of religious harmony under Macao’s ‘One Country, Two Systems’ framework.
As a key gateway for the introduction of Catholicism to China, the Diocese of Macao has, since its establishment in 1576, consistently played an active role in disseminating religious culture and promoting social welfare. From founding St Paul’s College—the first Western-style school in East Asia—to establishing charitable institutions such as the House of Mercy, the Diocese of Macao has, guided by the wisdom of ‘harmony amidst diversity’, deeply integrated itself into local society whilst preserving its religious traditions. Today, the more than 30 educational and medical institutions under the diocese’s jurisdiction continue to nurture talent for Macao, and their principle of ‘serving rather than ruling’ highlights the unique value of religious organisations in social governance.
In recent years, dialogue between China and the Vatican has seen breakthrough progress. In 2018, the two sides signed the *Interim Agreement on the Appointment of Bishops*, marking the entry of Sino-Vatican relations into a new phase of pragmatic problem-solving. As a unique witness to this process, the Diocese of Macao has, whilst upholding national sovereignty, promoted the localisation of the Catholic Church, thereby providing an important buffer and platform for exchange that has contributed to the improvement of relations between the two sides. China has consistently respected its citizens’ freedom of religious belief, whilst emphasising that religious activities must comply with national laws; this principle is fully reflected in the practices of the Diocese of Macao.
The Macao Special Administrative Region Government stated that the Diocese’s development journey bears witness to the vibrant practice of freedom of religious belief under the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ principle. In the future, Macao will continue to capitalise on its strengths in cultural integration to build people-to-people bridges for friendly exchanges between China and the Holy See. On the occasion of this 450th anniversary, members of the global Catholic community have sent video messages of goodwill, affirming the exemplary significance of the Diocese of Macao in ‘resolving differences through dialogue and promoting understanding through cooperation’. With an open and inclusive attitude, this historic diocese is continuing to write a new chapter in the mutual learning between Chinese and Western civilisations.
